The twentieth century saw feminism winning many important victories around the world. Stepping forwards into this century we have witnessed many victories for women around the world, including locally here in Korea. Yet the struggle for equality is ongoing – one that cannot be ignored. Here in Korea the disparities between men and women are blantantly apparent: few women are government ministers or senior executives; women still receive less pay than men for the same work and vast disparities still exist in society’s expectations of female and male behavior.
So, how should these gender inequalities be addressed?
Rebecca Cant and Angela Lytle, co-founders of the Wild Women’s Performing Arts Festival, have found a possible solution. “One doesn’t have to attend too many shows or events in Korea to notice that women are in the minority of those getting up on stage,” said Rebecca Cant. Under the auspices of the Festival, they have provided a rare and unique forum where women performers can join together and raise awareness about gender issues here in Korea and around the world. Through aural and visual performances from female poets, musicians, storytellers and dancers, the event expresses the issue of gender equality in a way that both Korean and English speakers can benefit from.
Now in its third season, the bi-annual fundraising event is fully supported by the Korea Women’s Association United (KWAU) and all proceeds are given to the KWAU. The KWAU, which was established in 1987, is an umbrella organization that unites over 40 member organizations including anti sex-trafficking groups, a domestic violence hotline and agencies for disabled women. They have made tremendous progress in the struggle for gender equality, including the enactment and amendment of laws relating to sexual violence and a successful movement that increased the number of Korean congresswomen from 5.9% to 13.5%.

20세기에는 한국을 비롯하여 세계에서 양성평등의 노력이 많은 결실을 맺었습니다. 하지만 아직도 평등의 투쟁은 계속되고 있습니다. 이곳 한국에서의 성차별은 아주 명백히 보입니다: 정부관직이나 선임 간부직에 있는 여성의 수는 남성의 그것보다도 훨씬 더 적으며, 같은 일을 하여도 여성들은 더 적은 임금을 받습니다. 또한 여성에 대한 사회 기대치는 남성의 그것과는 크게 다릅니다.
그렇다면 이러한 불평등을 어떻게 해결해야 할까요?
Wild Women’s Performing Arts Festival의 1,2회 기획자인Angela Lytle과Rebecca Cant는 가능한 해결방법을 찾았습니다. Rebecca Cant가 말하길, 여성이 사회적 약자이며, 소수자라는 것을 알리기 위해 거창한 쇼나 대규모 행사에 참석할 필요는 없다고 했습니다. Wild Women’s Performing Arts Festival이라는 이름으로 아티스트들과 함께 성문제에 대해 이야기하고 다채로운 공연을 통해 그것을 알릴 수 있는 ‘소통의 장’을 마련하는 것만으로도 우리는 젠더 이슈를 사회 밖으로 표출할 수 있을 것입니다.
오는 2월 27일, 제3회를 맞는 본 행사의 모든 수익금은 한국여성단체연합에 기부될 것입니다. 한국여성단체연합은 여성운동단체간의 연대와 소통을 도모하고 성 평등, 민주ㆍ복지, 평화ㆍ통일의 지속 가능한 사회실현을 위해1987년 2월에 창립된 한국의 대표적인 여성운동단체로써 성폭력, 가정폭력, 성매매 등 여성폭력근절과 여성장애인, 이주여성 등 소수자 인권을 위해 활동하는 전국6개 지부, 27개 회원단체와 함께 활동하고 있습니다. 이들과 함께 지난20년간 성폭력특별법, 가정폭력방지법, 성매매방지법을 제정하고 호주제를 폐지했으며 여성국회위원의 비율을 5.9%에서 13.5%로 늘리는 등 한국여성의 인권과 성평등을 위해 노력해왔습니다.
Wild Women’s Performing Arts Festival 2010
The Wild Women’s Performing Arts Festival on February 27th is actually the prelude to an even larger event this year, International Women’s Day (IWD). IWD is a global event that is held on March 8th each year in order to encourage equality between men and women.
The Festival will feature up and coming artists Orgeltanz and Dringe Augh, both from South Korea’s indie label, Electric Muse; as well as Bigbabydriver, Oriental Lucy and a solo performance by Zee of The Pines, just to name a few. (See the Artists page for details, links and more). If you have never heard the Seoul septet Orgeltanz, then you are missing out! It includes internationally-acclaimed belly dancer Eshe and features a unique bohemian vibe.
The chosen venue this year is the beautiful Mong Hwan in Sinchon, which consists of three beautifully and artistically designed floors. Bands, spoken word artists and dancers will be featured on the separate floors. A colorful auction showcasing the works of local photographers and painters themed “Women: Strength, Beauty, Unity,” will also be held during the evening. All proceeds raised will go to the KWAU. And a late-night DJ session will ensure that everyone is entertained until the wee hours of the morning.
One night is not enough to eradicate gender inequality, but it is a step in the right direction. Through continuous activism and support, women in Korea and throughout the world will be given the same opportunities and benefits as men.

2010년 2월 27일에 열리는 Wild Women’s Performing Arts Festival은 3.8 세계 여성의 날 기념행사의 전주곡입니다. 3.8 세계 여성의 날은 1908년 미국 뉴욕의 루트거스 광장에 여성노동자들이 노동조합 결성의 자유와 참정권을 외치며 거리로 나온 것이 계기가 되어 해마다 3월 8일, 여성 및 사회적 약자에 대한 모든 차별과 폭력을 거부하고 실질적인 성평등의 확산과 평화를 위해 열리는 세계적인 행사입니다.
올해 행사는 ‘오르겔탄츠’와 ’드린지 오’, ‘빅베이비드라이버’, ‘오리엔탈 루씨’, ‘더 파인즈의 지강’ 등 많은 아티스트들과 함께 다채로운 공연이 준비되어 있습니다.(아티스트,링크 페이지 참고). ‘오르겔탄츠’와 세계적인 명성을 자랑하는 밸리 댄서 ‘에쉬’의 환상적인 공연을 절대 놓치지 마시기 바랍니다!
행사장소는 신촌에 위치한 예술적으로 디자인 된 3층 건물, “몽환”입니다. “여성: 강함, 아름다움, 통합”이라는 테마로 이루어진 지역 사진작가와 화가의 작품들의 다채로운 공개 경매가 진행될 것입니다. 모든 수익금은 한국여성단체연합에게 기부될 것입니다.
성 불평등을 하루아침에 근절하기는 힘들지만, 우리의 이 같은 노력은 성 평등을 향하여 한 보 앞으로 전진할 수 있도록 해 줄 것입니다. 계속되는 관심과 노력, 그리고 우리의 활동으로 한국을 포함한 전 세계 여성은 남성과 동등한 삶을 누리게 될 것 입니다.
